Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about working with an independent agent, understanding your coverage, and protecting what matters most.

Getting Started4 questions

Working with an Independent Agent

  • An independent insurance agent works with multiple insurance carriers — not just one company. That means I can shop the market on your behalf, compare rates and coverage options, and recommend the policy that truly fits your needs and budget.

Unlike a captive agent who can only offer one company's products, I have the freedom to find you the best value across dozens of top-rated carriers.

  • I'm paid a commission by the insurance carrier when you purchase a policy — you pay nothing extra for my services. The premium you pay is the same whether you buy directly from the carrier or through me. The difference you get using me as your agent is the peace of mind in knowing that when you have questions or concerns and need to speak with me, you get just that — me! No call centers, no transferring of departments, just me. That is valuable in itself, and to enhance that, we get to build a relationship!

  • I serve clients throughout all of Illinois. Most policies can be handled entirely by phone, email, or video call — so distance is no barrier. Should you prefer to meet in person, I am happy to come to you (like the good old days!) or meet you for coffee or a meal and keep the tediousness of insurance casual and friendly. Reach out and we will figure out the best way to work together!

  • Yes — you can transfer your existing policies to me as your agent of record at no cost and with no change to your coverage or premium. It's a simple form that takes just a few minutes.

Once I'm your agent, I can review your current coverage, identify any gaps, and shop for better rates at your next renewal.

Coverage4 questions

Understanding Your Coverage

  • I help clients with a wide range of personal and commercial insurance needs, including:

    Home & Renters · Auto · Life · Commercial / Business · Umbrella · Boat & Watercraft · and more.

If you have a coverage need that isn't listed, just ask — I can often find a solution or point you in the right direction.

  • Coverage needs vary based on your assets, lifestyle, and risk tolerance. I take the time to understand your full picture before making recommendations — not just sell you the most expensive policy. A good rule of thumb: your liability coverage should be high enough to protect everything you own. We'll walk through this together during your consultation.

  • Term life insurance covers you for a set period (10, 20, or 30 years) and pays a death benefit if you pass away during that term. It's typically the most affordable option and is ideal for income replacement during your working years.

Whole life insurance is permanent coverage that builds cash value over time. It costs more but never expires and can serve as a financial planning tool. The right choice depends on your goals — I'll help you compare both.

  • Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage. In Illinois, flood risk can be significant depending on your location. Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private carriers.

If you live in a flood zone — or even a moderate-risk area — I strongly recommend adding flood coverage. Let's review your property's risk together.
Quotes & Pricing3 questions

Getting a Quote

  • Getting a quote is easy. You can fill out the quote request form, call me directly, or schedule a free consultation. I'll gather a few details about your needs and come back to you with options.

  • For a home insurance quote, it helps to have:

Property address · Year built · Square footage · Roof age and material · Current coverage (if any) · Any recent renovations or upgrades

Don't worry if you don't have everything — I can often work with what you have and gather the rest during our conversation.

  • Each insurance carrier uses its own formula to assess risk, and they weigh factors differently — your insurance score, claims history, location, home construction, and more. That's exactly why working with an independent agent is valuable: I can compare how multiple carriers rate your specific situation and find the best combination of price and coverage for you.

Claims3 questions

Filing a Claim

  • Contact me first — I'll guide you through the process and make sure you're filing correctly. You can also contact your carrier directly if it's an emergency. Here's the general process:

    1. Document the damage with photos · 2. Contact me or your carrier · 3. Complete the claims form · 4. Work with the adjuster · 5. Receive your settlement
  • It depends on the type of claim, your claims history, and your carrier. Some claims — especially weather-related ones — may not affect your rates at all. Others, like at-fault auto accidents, often do. I'll help you weigh the pros and cons before you decide whether to file, so you can make the most informed decision.

  • Absolutely — that's one of the most important things I do. I'm your advocate throughout the entire claims process. If you're having trouble with your carrier or feel a settlement offer is unfair, I'll go to bat for you. My job doesn't end when you sign the policy. My job is to help combat all of life's little un-expectancies and navigate them with you.
